San Francisco personality and wealthy financier, Sutro developed an improved process of ore processing implemented in Nevada mines. Sutro planned and built a tunnel to drain and and ventile the rich silver mines of the Comstock Lode. The sale of this tunnel in 1879 made Sutro incredibly wealthy. At one time Sutro owned over one thousand acres in San Francisco. A portion of his former holding are called Stutro Heights.
