Aetna National Bank originated on May 29, 1792 as the Hartford Bank.  The Hartford Bank was the first bank to be granted a charter by the State of Connectut.  The bank was supported by a number of illustrious personalities including Jeremiah Wadsworth, John  Trumbull, and Noah Webster.  In 1865, the Aetna National Bank it became known as the Hartford National Bank after enlisting in the national bank system.  In 1915, the bank merged with Aetna National Bank and became known as Hartford-Aetna National Bank.  The next major change occurred in 1927 when it became the Hartford National Bank and Trust Company after merging with United States Security Trust Company.
