Known as "AP" to his close associates, Giannini founded the Bank of America, at one time the largest bank with $6 billion in assets. But Giannini did not believe that accumulation of great wealth was desirable. On his death he left a modest estate and directed that $439,279 be given to the Giannini Foundation. Giannini signed this draft on Bank of Italy, the forerunner of Bank of America.
