Ann Landers was the pen name of Esther "Eppie" Lederer that was originated by a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. Lederer won a writing contest that landed her the job as the new columnist. The "Ann Landers" column debuted in October of 1955 and appeared in syndication for over 45 years. Her sister, Pauline "Popo" Esther Friedman Phillips started a competing column known as "Dear Abby". The competition led to a estranged reationship between the sisters.
