Benjamin Altman autographs are scarce from this man known the King of Dry Goods. In 1865, Altman organized the B. Altman store on Sixth Avenue and 14th Street in New York City. His dry goods business flourished under Altman's guidance and he moved to Sixth Avenue and 19th Street. In 1906, Altman moved his store to Fifth Avenue and 34th Street (shown below) where it became one of the largest department stores in the world. Contemporary publications described his six-story store as the greatest shoppping center in the world.
Altman was a great businessman who accumulated a great deal of wealth. His magnificent collection of art, including paintings by Rembrandt, were donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His former artwork is one of the cornerstone collections in the museum and is displayed in a room devoted to his collection.
