Charles Davidson gained eternal fame when he adminstered the famous Amnesty Oath to Robert E. Lee in Lexington, Virginia on October 2, 1865. Lee's Amnesty Oath confirmed his allegiance to the United States Constitution and initiated the surrender of the South in the battle among the states. Seven days later, the American Civil War came to an official close when Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
