Elsie Janis was known for her talents as a screenwriter and entertainer. She is probably best known as The Sweetheart of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). During World War I she paticicipated in numerous rallies to raise money for government war bonds for the United States. These American war bonds were know as Liberty Bonds. Her pioneering efforts involving entertainment of soldiers was the precursor to modern troop rallied by many other illustrious stars who followed in her footsteps. She entertaned American and British troops in foreign countries, a pioneering effort by a woman entertainer. Janis wrote about her experienes in a popular book : The Big Show: My Six Months with the American Expeditionary Forces (published in 1919). Janis recorded her expereince in a 1926 Vitaphone musical short, Behind the Lines.
