Eva La Gallienne was one of America's leading actresses in the early twentieth century. In 1926 she established The Civic Repertory Theatre, the first of its kind in America. In 1928 she performed Hedda Gabier to sellout crowds. Her fame led to her inclusion on the front cover of Time Magazine on November 25, 1929. In 1964 she was awarded a special Tony Award for recognition of her work with the National Repertory Theatre. La Gallienne was also know for her affairs with famous people including Tallulah Bankhead, Beatrice Lillie, and Basil Rathbone.
