Gospel Publising Company in Chicago, Illinois, was one of the first African-American publishing houses in the United States.  In the early 20th century, Chicago was the epicenter of publishers of gospel music.  The Dorest House of Music piblishers was owned by the legendary Thomas A. Dorsey.  Dorsey has been described as the "Father of Gospel Music."  Doresy and several other musicians assembled the first gospel choir in Chicago at Ebeneder Baptist Church.

Chicago was the location of the largest gospel music publishing houses in America.  Besides Dorsey's publishing house, the Bowles Music House, Inc., owned by Lillian Bowles, and the Martin and Morris Music Studio, Inc., co-owned by Sallie Martin and Kenneth Morris, were also located in Chicago.
