Hand Hartung was a German-French painter known for his gestural abstract style. Hartung was also a decorated World War II veteran of the french Foreign Legion. In 1935, he was arrested by the police in Berlin when he tried to sell his paintings. The Nazis considered his paintings as degenerate because they were associated with cubism.
