Henry Stanley was a famous African explorer who inspired The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. In November 1871 Stanley found fellow explorer David Livingstone in Tanzania. On seeing Livingstone he allegedly uttered his famous greeting: Livingstone I presume. Stanley was also a soldier in the American Civil War having served as first a Confederate soldier and the a Union soldier.
