Born in Ireland, Fair emigrated to America in 1843 and went to West in the year of the famous '49 Gold Rush. Fair's group of financiers organized their holdings around their own Bank of Nevada and stumbled on the silver and gold pocket of the Consolidated Virginia Mine. This has been thought to be the most valuable single ore pocket ever found. In the next six years after its discovery, the owners took more than one hundred million dollars out of the mine before it was exhausted. Fair served six years in the U.S. Senate.
