James Mason: Who says the United States doesn't tolerate free speech? Mason served in the House of Representatives and later as Senator from Virginia. After being expelled from the Senate in 1861 for his vociferous support of the Confederacy, Mason was appointed Confederate States Commissioner to Great Britain and France. Mason was captured by Union forces while travelling aboard the British mail steamer "Trent." In order to avoid a conflict with Britain, President Lincoln had Mason released from jail.

This reproduction would look great in an album or display.
