John C. Haskell was executive officer of Hood's artillery at Gettsburg. During command of an artillery batallion, Colonel Haskell lost an arm at Gaines' Mill.  He had a distinguished military experience at Petersburg.  His biography of the Civil War, The Haskell Memoirs, were used extensively by Douglas Southall Freeman and many other writers.  His account of the Appomattox campaign is one of the truest accounts of that portion of the Civil War.  Haskell became an attorney after the Civil War.  General Wade Hampton was his father-in-law.  This John Haskell autograph check image would look great in a civil war collection.
