John Locke (1632-1704) is known as the father of English Empiricism and perhaps the greatest influence on Jefferson's writing of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson considered Locke among the "...greatest men that have ever lived..."  Locke is revered as one of the greatest and most influential of philosophers.
