Nicknamed "Black Jack," Pershing served as a military commander in Cuba, the Phillipines, Tokyo, and France. A book he wrote about his military experiernce won a Pulitzer Prize in 1931. This check was wriiten the same year his Meuse-Argonne offensive destroyed German resistance. Pershing Square in New York City is named after this famous World War I commander.
