JOHN RODGERS (1772-1838) was a Senior naval officer, serving under six presidents during his distinguished four-decades military career. Rodgers fought with distinction in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812. In fact, it was Rodgers' ship that fired the first shot of the War of 1812. Later, he would play a key role in the recapture of Washington, D.C. after the British had attacked and burned the city. During his long career, Rodgers served on/ commanded such prominent vessels as the U.S.S. Constitution, the U.S.S. John Adams, and the U.S.S. Guerriere. From the 1790's through the 1830's, Rodgers helped to develop and to define naval standards, customs, and traditions. JOHN MASON (1766-1849) was perhaps one of the most prominent 19th century businessman in Georgetown. Mason was appointed Brigadier-General of the District of Columbia Militia. He was the founder of the first bank in Washington (the Bank of Columbia, in 1793) and would later serve as its president. He was also president of the Potowmack [Potomac] Company, with significant canal interest. During his long life, he became friends with such notables as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe (all of whom dined at his mansion).  This John Ridgers autograogh check reproduction would look great in your home or office.
