In 1777, American military leader Lachlan McIntosh killed Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, in a duel. Gwinnett's autograph became the scarcest and most valuable autograph of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. After the duel, Gwinnett was tried and acquitted of murder. George Washington, fearing Gwinnett's allies would take revenge on McIntosh, ordered him to report to Continental Army headquarters where he spent the winter of 1777-1778 with the Continental Army at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, commanding several regiments of troops.
