Louis Brandeis was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1856 to a family supportive of many secular traditions. After completing his secondary education in Germany, Brandeis returned to the United States where he studied law at Harvard. Brandeis became a successful lawyer representing small companies against giant corporations. In 1916 Brandeis was appointed a judge of the U.S. Supreme Court judge, the first person of Jewish heritage to ever be appointed to this position.
