Mark Lemon Autograph

Mark Lemon was the first editor of the popular British publication Punch.  This interesting autograph check reproduction was dated May 23, 1870, the same day that Mark Lemon died.  It is drawn on the London & County Bank at Horsham for one pound and is payable to L. Mackerpherson.  The original check was completed by Lemon and in another hand "Drawer Deceased" i written on te bottom on the check.

Lemon died at his home, Vine Cottage, on the morning of May 23rd, 1870.  According to Professor Adrian's biography of Lemon, "...towards morning he spoke briefly.  At his bedside sat Annie Duffell the faithful servant...as she watched him he went quietly back to sleep.  There flowed some minutes of deep breathing, the silence..."

Lemon was a talented journalist, and author.  He wrote more than sixty melodramas, operettas, and comedies.  Many of his works were produced in London.  He also wrote for many magazines and newspapers.  Lemon also wrote over one hundred songs, Christmas fairy tales, and several novels.

Lemon and Henry Mayhew cofounded a humorous weekly publication called Punch.  The paper became a sensational hit and rose to being defined as a "British Institution."  Lemon also contributed to Illustrated London News.  This landmark publication added pictures to the text of articles.  Lemon also contributed to another popular publication called The Field.

Mark Lemon autograph mementos are few and far between.  This Mark Lemon autograph reproduction would look great in an album or display case.
