Martin Madan, a Methodist chaplain in London, caused one of the great controversies in the late 1700s when he advocated polygamy as a cure for prostitution. Madan's theory of polygamy was described in his book "Thelpthora" (1780). This is a rare autograph check image from Madan, one of the earliest and most outspoken champions of polygamy.
