What! You've never heard of Philip Deidesheimer? Why he was the man who invented the system of square set timbering while working in the famous Comstock Lode in 1860. His invention paved the way for gold and silver mining in the Old West. Despite the fortunes generated by his invention, Deidesheimer died a pauper in 1906. The town of Philipsburg, Montana is named after Deidesheimer.
