Polar Ice and Fuel Company check signed by H.L. Dithmer. Dithmer worked as a newsboy, office clerk, and bill collector, and as a teen owned a cigar store and news stand. In 1885 he went to work for Shover & Dickson Ice Co. as a bill collector, ice cutter and handyman. In 1892 he organized a group of investors and bought the company. He became manager of the new Polar Ice Co. and it grew to be the largest ice co. in Indiana. In 1903 the co. began selling coal and was renamed Polar Ice and Coal Co. Dithmer became president of the co. in 1923. Dithmer was head of the BBB for five years, president of the Indianapolis Utilities District and local administrator for the National Recovery Administration in 1934. He died in 1945. This H.L.
