On October 12, 1504, Isabella the Catholic executed her will in Medina del Campo (Valladolid). In the document she expressed her desire to be interred in his modest monatery in Granada, Spain: "Let my body be interred in the Monastrary of San Francisco, which is in the Alhambra of the ciy of Granada, occupied of said order, drssed in the habit of the blessed pauper of Jesus Christ, St. Francis, in a low sepulcher, without any minument except a plain stone, with the inscription cut on it. But I desire and command, that if te king, my lord, should choose a sepulcher in any church or monastery in any other part or place of these my kingdoms, my body be transported thither, and buried beside the body of his highness; so that the union we have enjoyed while living, and which, through the mercy of God, we hope our souls will experience in heaven, may be represented by our bodies in the earth."
A month later, on November 16, the Queen expired and after a few days, the funeral cortege began a difficult 23-day journey through the intense cold and torrential rain which caused the rivers to overflow and bridges to collapse. The body was interred at this location on December 18, 1504.
On February 6, 1518, she was joind by the remains of King Ferdinand. However, when the Royal Chapel was completed, Emporer Charles ordered that the bodies of his grandparents be transferred there. The bodies of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand were moved to the Royal Chapel in Granada, Spain, on November 10, 1521.
