In 1861 he advanced from being a Brigadier General in the C.S.A. ti Major General of the C.S.A. In 1863, Ewell commanded Stonewall Jackson's Corps. In 1862, Ewell led the advance into Pennsylvania and took part in the battle of Gettysburg. In 1865, he was captured by Union forces at Sayler's Creek.
