Samuel Bradhurst: This item is a wonderful document dated 1794, New York City, where James C. Roosevelt has given a 17 year lease to Dr. Samuel Bradhurst for a shop on Pearl St......signed on fourth page by James C. Roosevelt, Samuel Bradhurst and Moses Fields.

Samuel Bradhurst of Pinehurst,(July 1749- March 1826) the Revolutionary war officer, was born in 1749. He was sent for schooling to the academy in Hackensack where he gained his diploma in 1771 at age 21. Bradhurst then studied medicine in New Jersey and was admitted to the practice of "Physic and Surgery" by a judge of New Jersey Supreme Court in Newark in 1774. In December 1776, Dr. Bradhurst joined the New Jersey Militia and was made an officer. In an encounter in mid-1777, while attending the wounded, he was captured by the British. It was then that he was placed under house arrest at the Hermitage.

In 1793, Mr. Bradhurst again added to his estate at Harlem, his relative, Samuel Watkins, appearing as witness before John Ray, Master in Chancery. That same year the firm of Bradhurst and Watkins was formed, at 314 Pearl Street.

Bradhurst is also known as a friend to both Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. In an attempt to keep the two from dueling, Bradhurst challenged Burr to a duel, but both Bradhurst and Burr escaped unscathed.
