Smith Thompson served as U.S Secretary of the Navy in the Presidential administration of James Monroe. He was apointed U.S. Supreme Court Justice by Andrew Jackson. Thompson was founding Vice President of the American Bible Society, providing a copy of the bible to every officer and enlisted man in the Navy when appointed Navy Secretary by President Monroe. His 1828 bid for Governor while on the US Supreme Court was unsuccessful; and on the Court, he was a staunch opponent of Chief Justice Marshall. A Smith Thompson autograph reproduction would look great in a home or office display.
