Stephen R. Bradley served as a Revolutionary War soldier for the colonial side. After the Revolutionary War he became very involved with politics in Vermont. He served as a county judge and also as a representative in the Vermont House of Representatives. During his service as a Vermont Superior Court judge, he helped settle the boundary dispute between Vermont and New Hampshire. When Vermont became part of the United States on March 4, 1791, Bradley was one of the first of two men elected by the Vermont state legislature to the United States Senate.
