Theodore Tilton was an American editor, orator, and author who was devoted to Evangelical Christianity and the abolition of slavery and woman's suffrage. He became a highly successful editor at the Independent, a Congregational journal, and a close friend and parishioner of the famous minister, Henry Ward Beecher.
In 1874, he charged Beecher with criminal intimacy with his wife and the case was tried by Plymouth church and the public courts, attracting wide attention. The public trial lasted six months and culminated in a hung jury.
