Thomas Lipton Autograph
A Thomas Lipton autograph is a great find for anyone interested in tea. Glasgow native Thomas Lipton loved to travel. In 1864 Lipton became a cabin boy on a ship that travelled from Glasgow and Belfast. After being dismissed by the shipping company, Lipton headed for America and spent the next five years traveling across the country. Lipton took a series of odd jobs to support himself. He worked as an accountant, bookkkeper, salesman, and asistant grocer. In 1870, Lipton returned to Glasow determined to succeed. He opened a market that became very successful. Lipton expanded into a series of chain stores throughouyt Scotland and Great Britain. In 1888, when he operated over 300 stores, Lipton became involved in the tea business. Lipton opened a tea-tasting store and managed to bypass middlemen selling tea so that he could offer his product at greatly reduced prices. He also purchased plantations in foreign lands to make available a constant supply of low-priced tea. Lipton also established his brand of tea that has endured to this day.
